That's right. I remember having it in Jamaica. I'd forgotten until you asked - but I think it's ugli.

I've heard that vanilla is a fruit, but I'm not sure.

Ok, I've cheated because I'd like to know:

1. The "Ugly fruit" is legit. It is Ugli, not Ugly.
2. Googling about Vanilla is interesting. Some call it a fruit and some call it a legume. I have yet to find the "right" answer.

If any of you can find a source that confirms what Vanilla (or Vanilla Bean) is (fruit, vegetable or legume) I'd love to know... so that I can get it right when I get on Jeopardy :)

Vanilla is the fruit of an orchid plant, which grows in the form of a bean pod. Although there are over 110 varieties of vanilla orchids, only one, Vanilla planifolia, produces the fruit which gives us 99 percent of commercial vanilla.
