    The use of an OHM meter is necessary for this task and a megger is even better.

    Check S to R, R to C and C to S and all to ground.
    The highest resistance will be R to S
    The lowest will be C to R
    The sum of the resistance from C to S and C to R equals resistance from R to S.
    A megger will give you a more acurate result than an ohn meter.

    Here is a manual that might help you understand some principles behind electrical testing of compressors. There is more to them besides being grounded.
