    General Appearance
The Afghan Hound is an aristocrat, his whole appearance one of dignity and aloofness with no trace of plainness or coarseness. He has a straight front, proudly carried head, eyes gazing into the distance as if in memory of ages past. The striking characteristics of the breed-exotic, or "Eastern," expression, long silky topknot, peculiar coat pattern, very prominent hipbones, large feet, and the impression of a somewhat exaggerated bend in the stifle due to profuse trouserings-stand out clearly, giving the Afghan Hound the appearance of what he is, a king of dogs, that has held true to tradition throughout the ages.
I need to brush up on my breed standards... it's "eyes gazing into the distance" not "through you" :o

I have met a couple over the years but not personally, just a brief pat and chat.

    Congrats Tick... enjoy!

Dog breed issue: owners do have a great deal to do with aggression, but I also keep in mind the general breed characteristics, the individual dog's temperament (extremely important), individual needs, and the amount of damage a dog can do. Some dogs are very stereotypical, while others are not.

Thanks, Doula, she is a replacement for my long time furry friend, Taffy, who just gave up on life a couple of months ago. She was very ill. Was having trouble deciding what to do, looked at many at shelters and didn't want another puppy. So you probably read the post about how her and I met.

She is supposed to be here to day but have recently found out, the woman's mom can't locate her (with the dog) because she is on the run from an abusive relationship. Now all of this comes out, poor Brook, what she must have been through the last few months living with that ! Its 2pm here now and she has never called me to confirm.

Its raining and thunderstorms here today, I swear to god when I get her we are walking in the rain !

Tick, all I could think about all day yesterday was Brook and you. I think I'm almost as anxious as I'm sure you must be.

Crossing my fingers. Every time I see that you posted here I'm hoping it's to say that Brook is with you.

Love and hugs to you Tick and to Brook too.

A walk in the rain sounds lovely. :)

He couldn't have had a better jockey in Borel, cats, as well. He has followed in some fantastic hoofsteps, Secretariat, Mine That Bird. They may not race him again. Make more money not racing him again, you betcha !

Hi cats, bell, no, no word on Brook, but I have words for that terrible woman after I take Brook off her hands, whenever that may be. Her mom hasn't heard from her since Wednesday (thats when this all started), doesn't know how to get in touch with her and even her own sister who lives in the same town doesn't know where she is. Wherever that may be I just hope that lovely dog isn't with her but in a safe place for now. I don't want to hear that she took Brook to the shelter to make a fast getaway, but I wouldn't be surprised if she did that.

    I need a posse guys !

Awww, I'm sorry tickle. You could call the shelter and ask if a dog matching Brook's description was brought in and ask if they can call you if and when she is brought in.

In my area if you are concerned about this situation (and it often comes out of a divorce) the various volunteer groups and local shelters will take the dog's description and notify you if the dog is brought in.

Also I've seen Vets do the same thing.

Of course, it has to be on a local basis.

I have no gut feeling either way but I'm hoping it works out for you.

Thanks Judy. I do have more important things to think about at the moment; like my job and how I perform so can't let this minor set back get in my way and it won't but the chain of events with this dog and dealing with people who can't keep their word really bothers me. Brook's original owner (itinerant) is moving down the states soon. Doesn't want his dog that he couldn't even initially care for and wouldn't let someone have her who could, me. Then she goes to a flaky broad who can't even handle her own life, let alone her life and a dog. Whatever.

We are pretty well spread out here (town to town) and there is only one shelter she can go to and Brook isn't there. I think she initially wanted brook for protection and is still using the dog that way. I don't know if she has kids; if she does she can't be moving around that much and keeping them out of school. Her mom is my client (and with work regulations I am not allowed to have any personal contact with the family other then work) and I am there tomorrow on regular scheduled time. This is such crap you know. I am so put out by this and would never go back on my word to anyone. I know some people would say 'but the issue is only a dog' but it isn't just that.

Talk about the circle of abuse. The mom has seven children, all different fathers, was abused by the last two men she lived with and is sueing the very last one. All her daughters are in abusive relationships. I don't have to say 'go figure'. And we get involved in threads about abuse and post after post of people not understanding the issue is 'what goes around comes around'. It is so prevalent in our society nowadays it is considered a profiling technique by the police.

I will take my attack cat Pickle (who is a terror once she gets going) with me if I go looking for Brook and sick her on whoever tries stops me !

Tick, I am sorry to hear that. It's a shame people have to be like that. Obviously she is only thinking of her self and not about Brook.

I hope everything works out for you, I hope Brook makes her way to you soon.

I know what you mean by "not just a dog" - let's just keep fingers crossed that you hear something.

Not what you are going through but when I went to pick up my GSD from an abusive home through a referral from one of the rescue groups I work with and saw her and she came to me (and was only 6 weeks old) suddenly she was for SALE, not just available to a good home.

On one hand I understood because she was AKC, a good line, papers. On the other hand another woman had looked at her, really wanted her but didn't have the money.

The whole episode made me sad and sick to my stomach - she was being sold to the highest bidder, not to the best home - but I ran to the closest ATM and brought her home.

That's how my parents got their first show dog over 20 years ago.

They were looking at buying a Rottweiler as a guard/family dog after their home had been broken into numerous times.

They contacted the local kennel club and were referred to a registered breeder. They went to the breeders home and were shocked.
The puppy they were going to buy was in their backyard in a crate, no shelter, no water, sitting in its own feces and in terrible condition.

They wanted to turn around and leave and not give them any money but they just couldn't. They ended up paying for Pagan and nursing her back to health.

She ended up winning a lot of ribbons at shows.

Only problem was she had a lot of behavioral problems and even though they spent countless hours and dollars on training she eventually had to be rehomed (she growled at me when I was about 4 for trying to take a ball off her)

She was rehomed for a very small fee to a family who supposedly had no children.

Anyway that's a whole other story but basically, they tried to do the right thing.

I hope you hear about Brook soon Tick.
