My dog had surgery for Femoral Head Necrosis today, they said he did really well. He is on an IV and pain med and doesn't want to eat, is that OK? I'm just so afraid for him. Will it take a long time to recover after this surgery and do you think he should stay crated? Should I make him boiled chicken tomorrow instead of giving him dog food to get him to eat. Please help me I'm just so scared for him. This is the first time we have been away from each other since I purchased him :-(

Sometimes they won't eat for a day after surgery, as long as he is getting fluids he should be fine.

Boiled chicken would be the best thing, it's nice and bland and gentle on his stomach.
Just offer a small amount at first as eating a big meal in one hit ill only make him sick.

I'm a little confused, is he at home with you now or still at the vets?
You say he is on an IV but you want to prepare some chicken for him?

The IV will keep him hydrated. He due fr a treat so boiled chicken or warm chicken broth is fine. Water should still be nearby. You can always try to feed him by hand.

Crating should keep him calm. He can't really move around much with an IV anyway.

Just like any human having surgery, it's important to at least get the dog walking even if its just a walk around the room

I apologize, no he is still at the vet I just called them and they said they tried to hand feed him a little wet food but he didn't seem interested. I want to bring him home tomorrow depending on what the vet says so I thought maybe a little treat of boiled chicken would intise him. I never had to go through this with any pet I have and the separation anxioty is killing me. Thanks so much again I felt so alone until you responded :-)

He is probably missing you just as much as you are missing him which could be contributing to why he is not eating at the vets.

What breed is he and do you have any photos you could share? :)

Sometimes dogs won't eat under stress of a new environment.

Not only is he in a different place, but he's also wondering why something hurts. Strangers trying to feed him food... Some dogs just don't eat!

I know my dog won't pee until she is in the safety of her own backyard! She use to be my show dog.. We'd be gone all weekend, and she'd never potty.

Dogs are strange. They do strange things in different environments. Thankfully, your pooch is under the supervision of a vet staff, so if anything were to go wrong, they'd be able to help him out immediately. I'm sure they're not too concerned that he's not eating, unless of coarse they have discussed this with you already with concern.

But I wouldn't be too worried. I wouldn't get to upset if he doesn't eat for the first day of him coming home either. He'll eat when he's hungry. Dogs can go a couple days without food and not be sick

How long have you had him?

Not to scare you, but the vet may not want to release him until he is eating and drinking. However, if you two have been inseparable for a long time, the vet may decide to let him go home where he would be more comfortable. Also, pain and pain medication may cause him to be a bit off his feed so don't panic if he doesn't eat the way you are used to him eating.

Because you are worried and are going to be excited to see him (and possibly bring him home), before you go to the vet's write down a list of questions you want to make certain you have the answers to such as crating and how much he should be allowed to move around. Write down the answers. More than likely the vet will give you a list of do's and don'ts. Read them before you leave, ask questions about anything you aren't certain about even if it seems minor.

The medical meaning is Necrosis or death of the femoral head means that the ball part of the joint is no longer properly functioning. This is due to loss of the blood supply to the femoral head. This may result from a growth abnormality or trauma. I say the ball and socked the leg connects to decays and decays and the leg is free standing without fitting in the socket any longer and they have to shave the socket away so bone is not rubbing on bone.

Sorry still trying to get the hang of this it takes me a little longer to respond. My vet doesn't have a 24 hour service so I paid one of the tech's to sit with him all night at the vet to make sure he does OK during the night 175.00 for her time. She is so great for doing this for me :)

Thank you so much, he is my life. The problem is, I purchased him in North Carolina and she mated the previous litter with the mother of that litter and made Oaklie which I didn't find out till after I purchased him and he started getting all these strange conditions

I'm just sick over this. This poor little thing has been through so much. He had surgery 3 weeks ago cause he had one testicle in and one out. He got and ulser in one of his eyes then in the other and now this. I just love him so much and would give anything for him. I have 3 other pugs to but they are little old men. No issues with them.
