Start with the first book in the Disc World series (Terry Pratchett).
Or, better than that, read On a Pale Horse by Piers Anthony. I promise you, you are in for a treat.

I LOVE the "Incarnations of Immortality".
Never been a Pratchett fan, though. See my previous post on not having taste ;)

I'm sitting here at my computer looking at On a Pale Horse which is on top of my computer cabinet. Methinks I will reread that series, although I am still a bit dizzy from Bearing an Hourglass.

I can totally relate to that idea, I think I learned what writers I liked by reading that series, and went forward from there.
And Roger Zelazny, I liked him too,he died too soon, like Gemmell did.:(

The Thursday Next books are a series--you'll want to read them in order. The first book is "The Eyre Affair"

Got it. Thanks! Going to Coles tomorrow at lunch! I'm excited. It's been a while since I started a book or series that I haven't already read!

Of course, I don't like Moorcock, so my taste is obviously lacking from the point of view of many fantasy lovers.
Nelson DeMille... Truman Capote... Stephen King..

Have to admit I'm partial to Martin, Jordan, Goodkind, Tad Williams, Patricia Wrede, Mercedes Lackey, Piers Anthony, Sara Douglass, Elizabeth Hayden, Eddings, Card, Scott Lynch, Hambley's "Time of the Dark" series, Susan Cooper, Robin McKinley, Feist, E.E. Knight (who's a crossover author), and Jim Butcher (both the Dresden Files and the Calderon books),
Clive Cussler, I have all his books in hard back.

Fooey, I missed the sci-fi discussion. Let me jump in late:
Spider Robinson. He's one of the funniest authors around, and can tell a story at the same time.
Alan Dean Foster, if you can avoid his Star Wars juveniles.
David Weber's fantasy series are better than his sci-fi.
David Drake, Jacueline Carey, Issac Asimov, Anne McCaffrey's been mentioned, and my favorite preacher - Robert A. Heinlein.

Piers Anthony and Robert Kornwise,Through the Ice.
Ken Hood,Demon Rider
Jack McDevitt, he wrote a few,Eternity Road(post apocalypse)And Ancient Shores(good ideas for that one)
