    1040nr, G-4 and Medicare taxes
    Dear all,

I am on G-4 visa working as a research associate for university. I received my employment authorization as an adult dependent of my husband. My husband is on G-4 visa working for an international organization and he is not filing a tax return.

Unlike him, I am filing every year 1040NR for as a nonresident alien. I am receiving W-2 form from university and Medicare Tax is automatically deducted. I know that people on F and J are exempt from paying FICA taxes. And because I am not eligible for the most of tax deductions that are provided for people filing ordinary 1040 forms, I am wondering if I have to pay Medicare and generally FICA taxes?

    Sincerely,
    Mila

Your income should be exempt from SS tax and Medicare tax.
Also your husband is still required to file nonresident tax return and Form 8833 to state as to why you are exempt from U.S. income taxes under provision of the... -U.S. Tax Treaty. You can call IRS and check.

MukatA -- thank you! My husband never filed a tax returned as he is not supposed to do it. People working under F or J visas are somewhat different, as their work is part of their activities in the country. In other words this is why they got admitted in the country. My situation is different—I was admitted as a spouse and then I found a job.

I will try to find out more about.
    Thanks again,
    Mila
