I'm so sick of taking Cyrus out for socialising and everyone just going "oh the poor thing, why did you do that too him"

Umm, how about he's my dog and it's none of your business
I was afraid we'd have to do the whole "crop/don't crop" debate again.

An agreement to disagree! What a discovery. Should we show this to JFE?

Or was I supposed to blast you because you don't have the same opinion as me? That's what we do here right?

Just ouf of curiousity, not for debate, what is the "purpose" of cropping. I can understand the ear tape, it causes no "damage" to the dog, but why do people crop tails?

Ear cropping was done for several reasons.
In Dobermans it was done to make the dog appear 'tougher' and more alert when intruders approached.
The tails were docked so that the dog could not show any signs of being friendly (ie: wagging its tail)

Cropping was also done on hunting breeds like the Great Dane so that the ear leathers wouldn't get torn on branches when chasing boar in thick scrub.

Docking was also don on working/herding breeds so that their tails would no get stomped on by cattle.

EDIT - Change "was" to "is" I'm too used to talking about Aus lol

In Dobes ear cropping was originally done to prevent bad guys from being able to grab the ears. The appearance factor only came in when the breed was being recognized. Dobie tails are built just like a Great Dane's except too small, so small that an adult wagging it's tail can break the bones.

Many consider it cruel. These days it really is cosmetic surgery, but I paid for my daughter's ear piercing, too.

The pain is only brief. The actual procedure is done under anesthetic, it's just the healing part that would hurt a little (only a few days) Then the tape stays on for a while which doesn't hurt them at all.

I have never seen a cropped dog in person.
In my searches I found that it was banned here in the 70's, tail docking is only a recent banning (in the last few years) and now they want to put Dobermans, Rottweilers, and a few others (can't remember off the top of my head) on the Dangerous dogs list.

Can't wait for the next bout of BSL

And thanks Aurora (or should I call you Bella?) his mullet is epic :D

With Chloe, the part she seems to dislike most is that she can't dive under the dining room chairs with her ears taped up. She doesn't realize she has grown enough in three weeks to not fit any more and she won't admit it if she does.

    Hehe, make a video :D

I was at the park the other day where they have agility stuff set up. There were a bunch of other people there and I got Prada to go over the jumps.
She did great until the big one... she smacked head first into it.
I felt awful, but I couldn't help but laugh... after I checked she was OK of coarse ;)
