We just logged off 3 acres of land. There are about 100 stumps on it. They stand about 18 inches high and range 8-25 inches wide. What is the best way to remove them? Do I cut them level with the ground? Then Cover them up with dirt or try to cut them up under the ground them cover them up with dirt? I would like to do it the cheapest way but a way that it will look nice. A contractor states that it will cost for him to dig stumps ou and remove them about $4000-$5000. Please help with some suggestions.

Sounds like your getting ready to build something (like a home), and the next thing you need to do to prepare your lot is get rid of those stumps or else you will have nothing but headaches later on.

Two ways to go that I can think of would be to rent or hire:
    • a stump grinder
      or

    • A small bobcat or backhoe

    And DIY.

That bobcat would cost 'bout $300 - 400 a day, and you could have it done in a 24hour weekend (12hours a day).

Like I said earlier, it's a pay me now or pay me later situation with those stumps.
