A possible reason for Washington politicians behavior
With tongue planted firmly in cheek, I offer the following as possible cause of the lunacy coming out of Washington.

The RDA limits for vitamins and minerals were established after World War II. One of the last essential elements included in the RDA system was iodine, established in 1980 and confirmed in 1989 (*8). The RDA for iodine was based on the amount of iodine/iodide needed to prevent goiter, extreme stupidity and hypothyroidism (*9). The optimal requirement of the whole human body for iodine has never been studied. Therefore, the optimal amount of this element for physical and mental wellbeing is unknown. Based on demographic studies, the mainland Japanese consumed an average of 13.8 mg daily and they are one of the healthiest people on planet earth (*6). Lugol solution is a time-tested preparation with a proven track record for over 150 years. Two drops contain 12.5 mg iodine/iodide, an amount very close to the 13.8 mg average intake of mainland Japanese.

Maybe we should dose the water in Washington with iodine.:)

Where can we get enough Iodine for D.C. We'd have to filter it all out of, say, the Atlantic.

The government is going in the other direction . They intend to comply with phony international guidelines and make rda the only level of dosage of vitamins allowed.

On July 4, 2005, the international Codex Commission passed final rules which will force consumers in most countries to get prescriptions for virtually all vitamins. High-dose vitamins and many supplements will likely become impossible to get legally.

    Hello tom:

Dude... Any government that thinks it has the right to control marijuana, thinks it has the right to control your vitamin C. If you support ONE, you shouldn't be surprised about the other.

    Tom,

Thanks for the heads-up on Codex.

If this is accurate, we have another must-win situation.

Tom, after thinking about that codex, I think your post must be about as serious as my OP.

No unfortunately it is very true unless there is a very unlikely change of course by Congress.
It is all contained in HR2749 John Dingell's Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009 .It has already passed in the House and another version of it is to be debated in the Senate .It will comply with Codex Alimentarius which is scheduled for full global implementation on December 31, 2009.The UN Codex Alimentarius is a trade Commission under the control of the UN/WTO that intends to make all therapeutic dosages(anything beyond rda) of vitamins, herbs and other supplements illegal . It decided in November 2004 that vitamins, minerals and all other types of medicinally useful supplements, commonly also found in foods, should be traded only as pharmaceuticals. The committee decided that health claims must not be made for any of them, and in large dosages they must only be available by prescription.
They claim this action is being taken to protect the public from toxic substances.
For the most part this law will duplicate European laws that already have adopted the Codex standards.
