You still have to go through the programs and pay the fines. The fact is you took the items whether they were recovered or not.
(It still amazes me how many shoplifting posts we get from Canadians on this site.)

Nohelp4u, If I were Canadian, I would be firing back right now. Don't be surprised when you get statistics thrown at you. I'd be curious to see, compared to the United States, what the per capita shoplifting convictions are. Watch your back.

I am sure the USA DOES have MORE shoplifting I am just saying that it seems that all the Canadian shoplifters seem to post here,

Most of these are Canadian and I know some aren't even in this search here

Probably because it's so rare they can't find info about it. :p I had that issue when I lived in Texas, until I learned the names of things. This situation can be very rough for a first time offender. My only charge ever and it haunted me for over 5 years. I felt harassed and under informed often. So I made dang sure I asked a ton of questions. I bet she doesn't even lock her front door at night. Shoot.

I know exactly what Nohelp is saying - the VAST majority of shoplifting questions here have historically been from Canadians. Many of them are repeat offenders so I don't know how well the diversion program actually works.

Nohelp is not causing a problem - I've posted this same thing before myself.

At one time I attempted to find out what the stastics are for shoplifting in the various Countries but, because of the different State laws, plea bargaining, diversion, it was impossible to tell.

So no slight to Canadians but search it out - it's been said before.

At one time - and I'm sure someone can find it if they search - the phrase being bantered about was something to the effect that shoplifting is a national sport in Canada. Believe it or not - the Canadians who were posted laughed, we all got carried away and the thread got closed.

Not everything is intended a slight.

I hate when you guys post things like this! The sarcasm monster in me is just dying to crack jokes at N0help for being smart and friendly DUN DUN DUNNNNNNN. Admit it, you hate Canada!! Joking, but seriously, I meant what I said, they probably ask because that information is hard to find for them. What do you think?

You think I don't have a sarcasm monster in me?

"But seriously" - I also meant what I said.

I can find the info on the Internet; Americans can find the info on the Internet; why would Canadians find it more difficult and have to post here? I searched the info out and wrote the info about the Canadian diversion program - I would guess that anyone else could have done the same.

For whatever reason (and I have no idea what that reason is) more Canadians post than Americans when it comes to shoplifting arrests.

Maybe this is a subject for the discussion board because "we" are hijacking this thread. The legal threads don't work the same way the other threads work.

Yep I was researching the Canadian shop lifting laws like crazy for a couple weeks about a year ago because of all the questions.
I learned about going to the Crown. The Crown sends you to Alternatives/Diversion program, etc,.

You know what I got for my offense? 3 years probation and a felony on my record the entire time, an inability to work in Human Resources until my felony was cleared off, and a GIANT fight with my judge to allow me to bartend because it was the only other job I could get that paid enough and was conducive to my school hours. Someday I will write a story about that entire incident. GRR.

I have to agree. This site DOES seem to get a lot of shoplifitng questions that are Canadian in origin. That's certainly not meant to insult or disparage anyone but it is an observable fact.
