Tax benefits for dependents on F2 visa
    Hi,
I am a PhD student and staying in Atlanta. I am on F1 visa now. Soon I will be getting married and bringing my spouse here in Atlanta. She will be on F2 visa. Is there any tax benefit I get if I show her as my dependent?
Right now around 15-20 % of my stipend goes into tax! So if I show her as my dependent, will that deduction differ?

    Thanks

That depends on from which country you originate.

Students from Canada, Mexico, India and South Korea are the only F-1 visa holders who can claim their spouse or children as dependents on the non-resident alien return.

I am from India. So in that case, can I get some tax benefit? Will there be any tax deductions now from my stipend?

    Thanks for the help

You will NOT be able to adjust your withholding. The IRS makes ALL foreign nationals claim SINGLE status with no more than 1 exemption to ensure that enough money is withheld to cover your tax liability.

You WILL be able to claim her as a dependent by filing Form 1040NR when it comes time to file your return. When you submit the Form 1040NR, you also submit Form W-7 with a notarized photocopy of her passport.
