Gave my dog too low of a dosage for his hearworm treatment last month, will he be OK?
My dog weighs 102 lbs, the vet gave me a heartworm pill in a packet and told me to give him this pill for his May treatment. Come to find out, it was a heartworm pill for a dog up to 25 pounds and I was supposed to give it to him in addition to the pill for 51-100 pounds. My husband gave him the pill for May and didn't realize either that we were supposed to give him two pills for May. The original intent of the vet was that we were supposed to get him under 100 lbs in weight and so the rest of the pills she gave us for the rest of the season are for a dog that is under 100 lbs. So, he only got a pill for a 25 lb dog for May and the mosquitos were terrible here! What should I do? Should I be worried? Should I take him in for another heartworm check now?

If you were supposed to give him 2 pills and you only gave him one, why can't you just give him the other pill? If you are only worried about last month, I personally wouldn't be too concerned for one month.:)

But that is just my opinion, you could check with your vet.

Thank you! Can't believe we did that! I will check with the vet to be on the safe side.

Don't give him the other pill now, as it is too close to the next treatment time.
You can take him for another heartworm test if you want, but you could probably just continue with the proper dose for June.

Any worm medication can be given at any time as long as there is a 2 week gap in between treatments.
I treated my dogs with an all-wormer 2 weeks ago and now I have to treat them again due to them getting fleas.

I would wait until his next treatment is due and make sure he gets a full dose this time.

I would give him another pill, the one that is for a medium size dog. If you live out on 5 achres of wooded area in the rual like we do , I would make sure he /she is protected. That is a horrible thing for a dog to go through. THe mosqutios are really bad this year all the rain everyone had. My vet would say to call him, and come pick up the additional size pill or chewy which ever you get in it and give him the rest. Better safe than a sick dog.
