I have had a violation of probation over my head since 2001, please no turn youreself in comments. I have not lived in the state where this happened since 2001, I have been stopped in the state I live even had to go to court for minor BS. My violation has never come up but I have a friend who is a cop in the original state who informed of the warrant status in 2001. Now need to know is there a statue of limitation for this that's number 1 number 2 if there isn't why haven't I been arrested when I went to court? The state with VOP is NJ and I now live in NYC. So figure it should have come up. I have been told that they will only come for you if you are detained? I am about to move again to Boston. I realize I should have turned myself in but since my vop I've married started a family and stayed out of trouble"last time went to court was for drinking in public" so I have cleaned up and I fear losing what I have worked so hard to create. Original charge was a 3rd degree offense I did 364 in jail and had 2 yrs probation. I did a majority of probation and it was suppose to be transferred to nyc when I asked to move there after 9-11 to be with the women who is now my wife. I figured I would hear from new PO when to report but never did so me being young I figured I was lost in the NYC system. Like I said I now know I do have a VOP warrant so my major question is is there a statue of limitations? Will I be fine if I stay clean?

You haven't been arrested because the cops would rather go to the doughnut shoppe than do their jobs... But, you'll find some cop someday who isn't lazy and he'll find the warrant...

There is NO statute of limitations on warrants. They WILL find you.

As Excon said - warrants never expire. If you are stopped for any reason, if there is a background check for any reason (including employment) the warrant will show up and you will be arrested.

And please don't attempt to control how your question will be answered.

If you go to the DMV and renew your driver's license and they happen to run your name your warrant may come up in their system. If you are stopped in a traffic stop your warrant may come up in their system. You will get caught eventually and have to face the charges. No, warrants for violation of probation never expire.

2. if there is a warrant you may or may not be arrested, if you are too far from the state with the warrant they may not want to pay to bring you back, happens all the time. I bet only 1 in 10 of the people I caught out of state on a warrant was ever taken in.

Normally they just are glad you moved out of state.

If you move back, and get stopped then it changes and you will most likely be held.

Many DMV does not actually run criminal backgrounds on most people.
