    Fan only spins on low
My three speed hampton bay fan only spins on low. I replaced the motor switch and that did not solve the problem. What else should I look at to allow all three speeds to work?

Well, usually the capacitor(s) determines the speed.

    lowest value = low speed
    Highest value = medium speed
Lowest in parallel with highest = highest speed

How does the switch behave with each click starting with off.

    OFF
    click A
    click B
    click C
    OFF

    Assuming a 3 speed fan, what happens at A, B, and C.

Does this unit have a remote? If so press and hold the speed button for 6-9 seconds.

A goes to low, B stays on low, C stays on low, and D turns it off.

I do not have a remote. When I pull the string the fan turns on low, next pull it stays on low and the next one. The fourth pull turns the fan off. The fan lights work every time.

    This seems very odd.

First: Does you fan have a dual capacitor? It's marked like 4.8 uf, 8uf or something. Two ends go to the switch. The common end goes to the fan.

There are other speed methods, but the capacitor method is the most common. Take a look at CeilingFanParts.com Home for some examples. Also not the various kinds of speed switches available.

    Do you own a multimeter?

If you can locate the cap, I'd like to bypass the switch and see what happens.
