When my washer drains, the water comes up in my kitchen sink. How do I fix this problem?

The new 2009 plumbing code calls for that household drain line be 3" because the old 2" code allowed too many people to shoulder your problem. How big is your pipe in the wall and the age/brand of washer? This may be just a partial clog in the drain that can be rodded, we'll see.

This is caused by as partial clog in the drain line. You nay snake from the washer stand pipe or the kitchen roof vent. If you come down the roof vent put outenough cable to reach the base and 16 feet more. Good luck, Tom

The drains for the washing mach. And the kitcken sink are combined... When a large volume of water is discharged from the washer it comes up the kitcken sink because the pipe is blocked up with sediment down stream from both fixtures... that builds up over time and the water comes out the lowest place possible instead of going down the blocked (or reduced drain)... solution: look for a "cleanout" which is a t fitting with a threaded removeable cap on it... use this access to run an eel-snake-whatever you want to call it... if there is no cleanout access sometimes the kitchen sink has a removeable trap to access the line... this is easier than going on the roof... run the eel down and remove it and test the drain... the length needed will vary from case to case...
