My dream job would be being a Marine Bio, and you need math and science, in science I got an A but math, ugh, Im horrible at it,
I understand the material but I forget it easily and I tottaly freak and break down during tests.
To get a good job in Marine Bio you need to go to university, and that's if you get really good grades and if your smart, which is not me, I can learn but I forget, I need a longer time to learn math.
I don't get why u spend a week doing a Social Studies project and then a day on one part of Math, that's too quick for it to be lodged in my brain properly.

You can go to a University. What's stopping you? If this is really your dream job nothing will stop you. Just take more math classes so that it sinks in more, do more extra credit. I'm horrid at math too, and you know what I do for a living? I'm an optician, my job is nothing but math. And I absolutely love it. It's what I want to do.

As I mentioned, nothing stops you but falling victim to your own unmotivation. Nothing comes without work, the work itself is the reward.

Meanwhile, the Marine Biology idea leads to a lot of simpler suggestions, too. Getting a job at an aquarium or zoo with ocean animals, even as a janitor, can open the door to getting to work with those animals eventually... patience and timing may be all it takes, along with letting people there know you have the desire.

Move to a tropical environment, learn scuba diving and then teach people. Work on a diving boat. Not everyone working on a university diving platform is a biologist with a degree.

Those are 2 minutes of ideas, there are more you can think of that I can't.

Piercings, tattoos and split tongues. Consider just exactly how you will explain these things to your grandchildren that look to you for morality when you are 50. And trust me, at 50 you still have the same passion and desire as when your 13. It's just tempered with the experience of 37 years of regrets for the crazy things we have done as teens.

I think one of your problems may be that you underestimate yourself. Some things that you have mentioned are very contradictory. Do you know how many threads I read here everyday where young people can't even form a sentence? Or for that matter, spell a simple word! It seems like you have a fairly good grasp on that.

I also think you might like to do things for the sheer shock factor involved. Splitting your tongue will get the shock alright, but I don't think it will be the attention you want... especially when you get older and more experienced.

My ex, got his certificate as a Master Rescue Diver. He achieved that at a local lake, through a diving school. He has saved human lives, as well as animals and marine life. He then put away a little money from each paycheck he got from his boring job, to go on trips to places like Hawaii, so he could go deep sea diving. My point is, he didn't have to start at the top of the game. He tried to learn everything he could from everyone he met, and did his OWN homework on the side. By the way, he wasn't good at math either.

You must have a local YMCA right? They offer classes there to get your certification, and that opens doors for you. They also have programs there that help you, if money is a problem. There are also grants and scholarships that you can apply for, in the Marine Bio field. There are a ton of things you can do to get your foot in the door, and as mentioned above, even if you have to start as a janitor, you can learn from others.

Just another thought... if you decide to split you tongue, that will only hinder your chances in the Bio field, and diving at whatever level. Not only in getting a job, grant, or scholarship etc. in that line of work, but the health risks of diving having done that.

I'm sure even McDonalds wouldn't hire you to serve their fish sandwiches, if you had your tongue split. In fact, your job choices would probably be limited to working in a tattoo parlour.

Just something to think about.

One more thing. Since it seems like you love animals, volunteer at your local SPCA. You can get more experience with animals there, and they always need help. Even if it's taking the dogs out for a walk and to play, or pet the cats and give them some love, it would be a good start.

Another promblem is that my parents are really protective and won't let me volunteer at the SPCA (enough though its like 2 or 3 blocks away) or anything else like that and we have no local or close by YMCA unless you take a ferry...

Who exactly are they protecting you from? The big mean dogs of the canine variety? Are you making excuses? I think if you sat down and honestly talked with your parents about your love of animals, they would approve of you volunteering at a place that is safe.

Im not making excuses at all. Our neighborhood isn't exactly homeless, drug, drinks, free. Lots of crazyies they say. Ive been asking for years, they say stuff like maybe next year, maybe next year, its too smelly there, we don't want you working with sick animals it may catch onto our cats, blah blah, if anyone's making anything up its my parents. If you want to walk dogs in our SPCA u need to be 18 and over or with an adult. First I wanted to be a vet but they said it would be gross and smelly and very un hygenic, they don't want me to work in a smelly place with sick animals. But I am planing to ask my parents again around winter break, but I majourly doubt they'll say yes. It's not racist or mean, its just ignorant. To think "protectiveness" is a geographic thing is unbelievably simplistic.

Anywhere on the planet, one house will have a lazy and carefree, the next house will be full of overprotective, overcontrolling parents, and the next house will have it right.

It's not Canadian, American or European that makes people overprotective, it's their own past.

Today I reread this whole post of so much nonsense, I remember I felt so pushed around by you guys, as if you weren't here to help me but to bring me down further (Some of you did help me feel better though!). I was not making excuses, when I can not, I can not, different locations, religions, families, age,past, etc give you limits in my opinion. A week ago or so I had a huge argument with my parents of the SPCA volunteer thing, they said I can in the summer but only if I volunteer at my Dads (-.- paper work n more paper work ugh) but I agreed, so hopefully they will keep to their side of the story too. But better than nothing, as for my tongue piercing thing, I do still want to get it, but since Im still not getting a lot of nessary advice upon it, I may just look forward to just a simple tongue piercing.

I read through the post again also to refresh my memory. Honey I saw more encouragement, than negativity. We were talking to you about your career path and such. I think that we were trying to explain the consequences, as far as health problems, career opportunities, etc. that you would face further down the line if you didn't put a lot of thought into getting your tongue split.

I realise that you are really wanting to express your individuality, but at your age you cannot make an informed decision. I'm in no way saying that you are stupid or anything of the sort. What I'm trying to say is your brain has not fully developed at your age, and you don't have the ability to see around corners yet. It's just a fact when growing up. I thought I knew everything there was to know, when I was your age. Boy was I wrong! Nobody could have told me anything when I was your age. I ended up doing some pretty stupid things that I regret doing, but thank God they weren't permanent.

I haven't had my tongue pierced so I can't advise you on that, but it is certainly a better choice than getting your tongue "split!" Personally, I don't see anything wrong with a tongue piercing if you get the information you need on how to take care of it to prevent infection. You can always take the piercing out when you want to, but with tongue splitting, you tongue won't grow back together. It's permanent. One day you will quite likely have children and grandchildren. What do you think your kids or grandkids would think of granny with the split tongue? Do you see what I mean about not being able to see around corners? Right now that seems 10 lifetimes away to you doesn't it?

I'm so happy that your parents have agreed to let you work at the SPCA! Those animals could sure use your help and compassion. Maybe in the meantime, you can come onto the dog forum here, and read through some of the posts, and help us out! We can always use the help of someone who loves animals like you do! You might even learn a little bit there too. If we can convince just one more person to adopt a pet from a shelter, instead of supporting the puppymills and backyard breeders, then that one less animal that has to die in a shelter because he doesn't have a home or anyone to love him. So, join us and help out if you'd like! :)

Ok, since I can see no one here actually gave you any facts about pain, pricing, risks, etc like you wanted, here you go. Here's a link to one of the best sites there is about body mods. It'll answer your basic questions about tongue splitting. TONGUE SPLITTING FAQ -- TONGUE LENGTHENING FAQ I'm not here to judge and I don't care how old you are right now. You said you wanted to get it done at 18, 19, or 20 right? If you still want it then, its your choice and more power to you.

Another good idea would be to search for tongue splitting vids on YouTube. There are vids of it being done, and vids of people just showing it off and playing with it. The biggest advantage though to looking up the vids is reading comments. It gives you an idea of how some people feel and react to split tongues. Plus, the person who made the vid. Will often answer questions. Who better to ask than someone who has gone through it? As far as jobs, I'm not completely sure of which jobs will hire and which won't. Well, except I know a piercing or tattoo place prob. Would. It depends on the job and the employer. You might have to find a job that didn't require interacting with a lot of people. Like a behind the scenes type of job or an at home job but then like I said, I don't know. Dating may be a bit harder and you might scare some people off but you will find people who will accept you for who you are. Personally I would get mine split(not right this second though, I'm 17), but I've got those job and dating concerns.

Here's my experience with tongue piercings. The price of mine was $50. The 2 main common gauges used are 14 and 12. Mine was pierced with a 12. They start you out with long jewelry to accomedate swelling and then you can come back 2 weeks later and they'll shorten it. It does hurt but it hurts less than biting your tongue on accident. It is EXTREMELY annoying the first week due to the swelling, pain and especially the long barbell but it gets better. You have to rinse it out with mouthwash after you eat or drink anything. Try not to get alcohol mouthwash but if you do, dilute it with water. Biotene is the best to use but kind of expensive. Before you know it you'll be used to it and it'll be completely healed. It heals very fast. Hope this post helped.

Jinxz, are you still going to volunteer at the shelter? Although there was info in the above advice, please remember that your career choices are going to be limited if you still decide to do this. Piercing is one thing. Splitting is another. Splitting is permanent, and it won't grow back. You are young, and I know you love animals, and you have a good head on your shoulders, so I know you will decide the right thing to do. Please don't be swayed by peer pressure! :)
