You're right Judy, the english language is being lost in translation. ;)
My sister on my mother's side means we have the same mother but different fathers. Father's side is same father, different mothers.
Have you ever met my sister? We're sisters on the far side. But that's for another board.
You and I, for example, are sisters on the AMHD side.

All right, the whole youse thing must have come from my crazy family. Those old style dutch Americans tend to use it a lot. I only say youse when I make fun of people. "Hey youse guys." Like the overweight tough guy on Futurama.

Text speak - I have no idea but I find the English (or semi-English) language is becoming more and more confusing.
And then there's the whole "my sister on my father's side, my sister on my mother's side" confusion.
... and where did this word "prolly" come from? As in... "I can prolly ask my bff to come wiv me" Which brings up another one! "wiv?"
ArtLady, I will answer the serious questions if I can, but I do remind them that chat speak/text speak is against the rules here! They are suppose to read the rules when they join. Some will appologize and use proper English, so we know they can actually spell if they want to. It's just a matter of being lazy. Many will get nasty with you, and tell you they will talk the way they want... after calling you names. These are the ones I won't bother with. If they don't have any respect, they will get what they give.

How do you differentiate between chat speak and just poor grammar and spelling?
Maybe English is someones second language , you would not want to be considered prejudicial ,would you?
I do appreciate the concept in theory but what are you going to do if someone with a very serious problem logs on and asks for help in chat speak?
If it happens on the legal boards the OP is asked not to speak in chat or text speak. Poor spelling is you. Text speak is U.
And, yes, people have come onto the boards and criticized other people's spelling, including on the forum help board. It was interesting because the "correct spelling" person used atrocious grammar - but that she didn't see.
I don't really know what the other boards do - I don't like chat/text on the legal board and it's very hard to take someone seriously, particularly when the person is giving advice, when there's a lot of "cuz" and "u" going on.

So true Starby. We deal with this a lot on the teen threads. When I go to the adult sexuality threads and someone is posting in chat speak, well, that's a pretty big sign that they aren't 18 and shouldn't be posting there.
We get a lot of young people here, and I welcome their questions, and try to give them answers, but I'm not willing to spend an extra 1/2 hour of my time just trying to figure out what they are asking in their post.
If they can't be bothered to spend the extra time to write a clear post, then why should I spend time de-coding it?

Exactly Alty! If they want a genuine response, they can at least have the courtesy to write their question properly!

Might be characters?
Computer's use bytes, nibbles and words not lines. Storage is in bits, bytes, nibbles or words. Might also depend on puctuation like color for that uses more VBScript. So "RED" is shorter than "RED" by 20 characters.

Nah, it's good. A double word is 16 bit. It can represent a number up to 65,535. A regular word only goes up to 255.

LMAO Judy. It's funny, most Americans think that all Canadians speak like newfies (Newfoundlanders) but that's not the case.
Starby and I were actually talking about this the other day. Yes, we do have some phrases that are different then yours. We say Grade one intead of first grade, and other things like that. Most times, when a Canadian is portrayed on TV, they make them talk like Newfies, I don't understand Newfies and I live in Canada.
Sneezy and I were talking the other day, he asked if I knew any Eskimos. Now I'm sure he was kidding, or I hope he was, but no, I don't live anywhere near Eskimos, I've never seen an igloo, never hunted a seal and it's not winter all year. ;)
Okay, long explanation, sorry, but now you know, eh? God, that feels unnatural, even when I write it!

If you don't understand chat speak, how do you expect to understand this: Nibble - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Why does this thread keep degenerating into food?

I sound like I'm from Lon Guyland (as opposed to Long Island). I sort of pick up accents and phrases as I go. After I long day of work I'm calling people bro' and dude. Takes a day or two to get back to normal.
While I'm posting this I am most definitely NOT a dude - maybe I should post my photo again. Dude-ette, possibly. But a dude? No.
And do you go on vacation or holiday?
Eh?

It is funny that most things portrayed on TV are either French speaking Canadians,, or everything in eastern Canada! It's funny how people think we say "aboot" instead of "about." I've only heard one person say "aboot" once in my life (a newfie) other than the comedians on TV who are doing a stereotypical act. The Western Provinces are MUCH different than the Easterners. I say "eh" once in awhile when I'm trying to be funny... or something like... "that sucks eh?" But more often if I'm being more serious, I'll say "hey that sucks!" Means the same thing, but with "eh" I'm more often than not, making fun of the ones that use "eh" after everything they say.
The Eskimo thing is hilarious! I honestly had someone ask me one time if I was scared of Polar Bears when I went outside, or if we had actual stores or if we went out ice fishing everyday to catch our supper! Too funny! Hahaha! I've known people from the States that think we don't even have cars here! They think we go places in dog sleds, and we eat Walrus meat for dinner! Oh, and we all wear touques! Alty... do you have a touque? I'm surprised I know how to spell it! LOL!

Anyone watching this US Airways Jet that just crashed in the Hudson River? I wonder how many people were aboard. The jet sank.
EDIT:: They got 151 people off the plane before it sank.
