I have a Kenmore stackable Washer/Dryer, model #47.93702201. My brother-in-:confused:law was using it when he heard a loud crash and banging noise and came out to open the dryer and see fire between the back of the tumbler and the casing. Upon further inspection, I notice one of the three bolts in the center of the tumbler missing and another badly bent. In addition, the dryer will no longer spin smoothly by hand but very tough and makes grinding noise when spun by hand while off. Can any one tell me where to start to look at this machine, what it might be, and if it is even possible to repair? Thanks so much and Happy Holidays!

I meant to post this picture of the inside back of the dryer to illustrate the point about one bolt missing and one very crooked. Here it is! Thanks for the help

The dryer will need to be disassembled to see exactly what damage has taken place to be able to calculate the damage and cost. The bolt missing is for the hub cover so the hub at this point could be damaged.

Whatever you do UNPLUG it from the outlet so you don't burn your home down. Still don't see where the flames were shooting out from. Was this a gas or electric dryer? If it was electric dryer you will have to carefully dismantle the whole unit and see what part blew. The fact you are missing a bolt means that the drum will not properly rotate at all until fixed.

Thanks Twinkiedooter. I had taken all the necessary precautions but appreciate the cautionary advice nonetheless! I managed to get it apart, and can see that the heating element(at leat I think that's what it is has broken. Not absolutely sure where to go from here. I know I will need a new element, and that looks easy enough to fix, but I'm guessing by the noise and broken bolt that the broken element was probably a secondary problem caused by the first. Any ideas? Bad bearing? Anything else to look at. I'd love to give it a full work over while I have the drum out and have access to it. Any info or links to additional info would be greatly appreciate! Pictures attached.
