I have cast iron sewer line connected to my first floor toilet.. added a new bathroom on my second floor and my carpenter was going to take the cleanout cap off and tie the new pvc into that but we couldnet get it loosened so we heated the lead and removed that from the cast hub , he connected the pvc to the cast hub with a 4x6 fernco... im concerned that where the new pvc meets inside the cast hub at the seam its going to evenually leak and come out around the rubber fernco

am I just being paranoid

I hate to sound rude but your carpenter should not try plumbing when he doesn't even know how to remove an oakum and lead joint. I wish you could post a picture. The Fernco coupler should be used to connect two pieces of pipe and not a pipe to a hub, he is pushing the limits. A cast pipe should be reinstalled into the cast hub and then couple the PVC to the cast pipe with the Fernco. Since you are doing a new bath why didn't your plumber do this task?

I will attempt to get a picture up.. you say its pushing the limits going this route,but its OK to fernco pipe to pipe but not pipe to hub I'm just curoius as to why

Let's make sure we're all on the same page here; Did he use a 'Fernco' (all rubber sleeve with two oversized stainless steel hose clamps) to go over the cast iron hub?

... Or did he use a 'Tye Seal' that goes inside the hub of the cast iron fitting?

iamgrowler,yes the 4x6 fernco with the clamps went over the cast hub on one end and over 4" pvc on the other end...the OD of the cast hub was like 5.5" and the fernco is a ID of 6" it seemed to clamp down pretty tight but I'm a worry wart not sure if this will hold up over the long haul

It won't hold up for very long at all.

What he used is called a 'Caulder Coupling' and it is intended for connecting 4" clay or concrete drainage tile to 4" plastic or cast iron pipe below ground where the sides are supported by the surrounding soil -- Without this support, the coupling will eventually shift and bulge out and leak.

Sorry, but your Carpenter is an idiot.
