    Changing indoor thermostat on heat pump
    Just build a new home. First time owner of a heat pump. We turn the indoor thermostat down to 61 at night and up to 68 in the morning. We don't adjust it throughout the day. Here's my question: Am I using too much energy in the morning by heating the house up from 61 to 68 - would I use less energy if I kept it at a more constant temperature - say 65? I notice in the morning it says "Auxiliary Heat" on the thermostat. We have a pellet stove which heats the area we live in most and setting the thermostat at 68 has been comfortable.

    You do not want the AUX or emergency heat to come on. When that happens you are using the more expensive resistance heat in the electric furnace.

    I am not a believer in using a set back thermostat for heat pumps unless it is one of the more expensive ones that locks out the resistance heaters on recovery. I would set my temperature where I am comfortable and leave it alone.
