No other version below XP is supported by Microsoft any longer. Many new programs will not run on Win 98.

I have found many people very unhappy with XP. Is this Microsoft's way of forcing people into buying something so awful, and then someday down the road coming up with a better system?

I don't fully understand your question and I'm not sure about your intent either. Ok; so I know you hate Vista (join the club) but I don't understand why you want to install an OS that preceded XP? For my two cents, XP is a stable and functional operating system that should meet the needs of most people. However, if you really hate Microsoft that much, you can go with Linux for cheap or Ubuntu for free.
