Pregnant female Pom is she showing signs she will deliver soon?
Hello everyone! I'm new to this site but it seems to be very helpful after reading through some of the other threads. I have a female Pomeranian who is preggy and I believe after calculating will be delivering sometime between now and the and of January. Yesterday while playing with her outside I had her sit in front of me to talk to her and love on her a bit and when she stood to walk away I noticed a clear jelly like substance on the ground where she was sitting. Is this a sign that she will deliver soon? Also she has a mate, when should I separate them she is already fighting to eat his food she went from half a cup to a full cup of kibble, am I not feeding her enough? She's very hyper and playful I'm worried when I let her out with the other dogs (her Pom mate, my zu, and lab) that she'll get hurt so I guess I'm wondering if I should make her a private area in my room now or wait. Thanks for your time and advice it is appreciated. :)

Yes, she does sound like she's about to deliver. Yes, reserve a private place for her to deliver and keep the male away from her. My 150 lb German Shepard decided to deliver all 9 puppies in my teeny tiny bathroom. I helped her. After the first two she got the idea (sort of) what was going on.
Just be there for her and let her lick the puppies clean. You might have to place a puppy near her nose in order to get her to lick them. Sometimes when they are born they don't breathe right away, but will start breathing when mom licks and stimulates them. It's better for you to be there and assist her so you can monitor if the puppies need any help in the breathing dept. You can cup your hand over their nose and puff into their nose.
Get a litter box for her also. A big cardboard box cut down to about 6" high would be ideal. This way she feels okay letting her puppies alone while she goes potty.
Puppies are wonderful when they are born. Remember they are blind when born. Try to let them nurse as soon as all of them are born also.

Thank you that was some great advice and wow I didn't even think about the litter box, that's a very good idea. :)

Here is a thread you may find helpful... make sure that you pay attention to the part of putting your pregnant dog on a puppy chow. Also if you are planning on spaying/neutering your dogs, depending upon where you are at,some rescues have very good spay/neuter programs that are low cost. I just gave out 5 applications for pets to be altered for 25 to 35 dollars each, so it is worth checking out to see what is available in your area. Good Luck and thanks for being kind to these animals in need.

How is your Pom doing? I think the goop you saw on the ground was the mucous plug that protects the contents of the uterus. It probably does mean she is close--days to a week. She will probably let you know when she wants to be left alone; once she starts to "den" keep the other dogs away if they are nosy.
You've probably found lots of good sites about the actual delivery process. Let her do as much as she can or will naturally, but small dogs, especially their first time, don't always seem to know what to do. Stand by to help clean off the sacs and cut cords (tie off with cotton thread if bleeding). You may need to rub the puppies vigorously to get them stimulated. Once she licks some of the afterbirth the hormones will start to kick in and she should do better. Or she may be a natural mother from the get-go.
Most important thing I can think of is that if you see a green/black discharge without an immediate delivery of a puppy get her to the vet asap. The color is normal, but means the part of the placenta that supplies oxygen to the pup has separated, and the pup is running out of air.
She is going to need lots more food, preferably puppy food for the extra calories. Watch for any weakness or seizures once she is nursing, especially the first 2-3 weeks. Small breeds are very prone to "milk fever", a severe calcium deficiency due to the demands of milk production.
Call your vets office & ask for someone to tell you what to expect, emergency numbers, etc. Delivery always seems to start at the worst possible time of night.
Good luck.

Well so far there's absolutely no sign of her going into labor and she is as hyper as ever also she's a little pig hehe. I'm trying not to over feed but I give her what she normally eats in the morning plus an extra feeding in the evening. She's had a few potty accidents but I'm assuming that's because there is little to no room and she can't hold it as long.
So last night I went and bought a playard for her and the puppies but I've had no luck in finding a kiddie pool the hard plastic kind anyway.. and for obvious reasons the inflatible ones were out of the question. So for now we're playing the waiting game :p I'll keep you all posted and let you know when the time arrives and ty again so much all of you.

Sometimes they have most or all of the litter before they settle down and let the pups start nursing. Licking the afterbirth off will help stimulate her milk letdown. Congratulations!

Thank you and yes she finally settled down after puppy number 2 and then... puppy number 3 was born.. so far I have 2 black/tans one male one female and a sable female. She still is acting restless so I'm hoping she doesn't have more than 4 I'm so worried about her but she's been awesome. She knew what to do right away. :D

Leave the cord alone unless it is so long its getting in the way. If you need to cut it, sanitize a pair of scissors in alcohol, tie the cord of with a little cotton thread and cut below the thread. The cords will dry up & fall off in a few days.

Thanks carolbcac yeah I did that. They are all healthy and nursing she stopped at puppy number 3 with no other signs of more or discomfort. Roxy is a good mama and I'll try and get some pics today. Boots the dad is a bit upset she won't see him but I have 3 male dogs in the home so she's been letting them all know to keep away. She has a huge appetite and every time she even thinks we have food jumps up even though it's mid day and has been fed twice already... should I give her as much as she wants while nursing?

Allriiiiight! Everything sounds good so far. I don't see a problem with feeding her free choice while she's nursing. These little gals have such small stomachs I'm not sure they can physically take in enough food at one sitting to supply their needs for milk production. Having food available all the time will make her less likely to gorge at mealtimes, although thankfully, toys aren't very prone to bloat.
