I just adopted an 8 week lab/hound mix from the local humane society. She was given to us with an upper respiratory infection. We were given medicine to give her. She is having a lot of trouble sleeping at night because of the cough. Is there anything we can give her to help soothe the pain of this infection?

Jway, there has been a rampant outbreak of URIs/Kennel Cough in a lot of shelters throughout the U.S over the past few years. It is very contagious. Thank you so much for choose to adopt and providing a loving home for this little girl.

There really isn't much you can do to help ease the cough outside of maybe running a vaporizer in the room she is in to help alleviate any congestion or coughs, as you would with a person who has a cold. If you are in an area in which the air is dry, the moist warm air will help. Make sure the vaporize isn't too close to her. Aside from that, this infection just has to run it's course. Since I don't know how long you have had the dog, how sick she is, and what medication has been prescribed, it is hard to say when you will start seeing a decrease in the coughing. Depending on the dog and the medication, the coughing should start to decrease in a few days time. Usually it takes a few weeks for the infection to run its course. If you have had the dog for a week or two and it doesn't appear she is getting any better, I would suggest you take her to your own vet for an examination and assessment.
