For 2007, the IRS has increased penalty for frivolous return from $500 to $5000.
Frivolous or groundless is commonly understood to mean having no basis in law or fact. For example, Filing as zero income and zero tax (even when you have income) to get all the withholding taxes back. //np For list of frivolus positions read http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-07-30.pdf or TaxAlmanac - Notice 2007-30

Most employers have already taken the taxes from your paycheck; what you receive is your 'take-home' pay.

    PinkToe50:

We have heard these arguments more times than I care to think about.

Paying income taxes is a LEGAL requirement. If you do NOT believe us, then do not pay them.

But then, do not complain when the federal marshals come and haul you off to jail for tax evasion. If it was good enough reason to jail Al Capone, it's certainly good enough for you.

Your actual taxes taken out of your paycheck is actually an estimated tax based on the information of your withholdings, What you file at the end of the year is a summary of those, you provide that information of your income and apply the tax laws, to see if you need to pay more, or get a refund.

So your tax filing at the end of the year is bascily a summary of your weekly paycheck withholdings to see if your estimated taxes were properly withheld.

At least that is how it was always explained to me
