Central heater won't start

I turn up my thermostat and don't hear that familiar flame light and start to blow.Does anybody know what's the problem?thanks.

Heater does not go on after switching on the thermostat to heat. Only hitting the top of the heater firmly will it to go on. Any thoughts why it's not going on as it should from the thermostat controls?
