    Water under the house and smell
    Can the soil being too hard create drainage problems, e.g. water under the house?

    Yes. Here in the atlanta metro area we have that. To remedy this a sump pump is installed in a hole where a five gallon bucket is installed with holes drilled in it. Then it is simply piped to the outside.
