Disposal discharge tube doesn't reach PVC pipe
Hi, I'm in the process of installing a new disposal in my kitchen but ran into a bit of a snag when I went to connect the new disposal.

I've attached pictures of the old/new disposals along with the pipe configuration under my sink. As you can see from the pictures, the new disposal is smaller in diameter than the old disposal, but the discharge tube running from the disposal to the continuous waste pipe is about the same size.

This means that when I insert the discharge pipe into the continuous waste pipe that the new disposal doesn't align with the mounting bracket on the bottom of the sink.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to remedy this - I could reconfigure the PVC piping underneath the sink but I don't have any experience with that. Or perhaps I could find a discharge pipe that would actually fit okay. Or I could spend $80 more and get a disposal with a wider diameter and hope that it fits...

Any suggestions regarding the best way to fix this problem?

    Thanks,
    Doug

The PVC section has to be re-done. The right hand side of the picture concerns me because there seems to be no easy way to break the joint there. You might consider a hose with clamps a.k.a. flexible coupling on the right hand side. Attach the disposer to the bottom of the sink and work from there.

While your at it, you should consider unions/flexible couplings to facilitate removal of the disposal for repair or replacement without cutting the PVC pipe.

PVC is very easy to work with. Cut square, and deburr, although there is a special tool for that. You use a sort of primer in a can with an integral brush followed by a cement. It really isn't a cement but rather a solvent.

Fit everything together before attempting to "glue" so that everything fits.

You need to wait 24 hrs before applying water pressure to the joints. In this case don't turn on the disposer either. PVC joits rarely, if ever, leak.

This is why I always advise replacing a disposal with the same make and model as the old one. That way you may use the old drain assembly and just snap the new unit on and the connections will all line up. Simple 15 minute job. Sorry! But you'll have to reconfigure your PVC drainage to accept the new unit or go back and trade it for the same type as you're taking out. Good luck, Tom
