I have heard a lot of horror stories about bipolar disorder. I met this guy who seems so very great. Hes super sweet and thoughtful and he's everything I asked for in a guy. The problem is he says he's bipolar and won't take meds cause they make him feel like a zombie. I really really like him... but I do have other options and although my heart is Definitely leaning toward him... my head is wondering if I should just stay away. :confused: he says he just gets depressed but I don't know. Are there different forms of bipolar maybe? Maybe he might be OK? I've only known one person that was bipolar, but I don't know if she acted crazycause she was also on meth... help!

Perhaps you should try being a friend to him first. If he doesn't like the effect of his medication he needs to see his doctor. Bipolar disorders range and there isn't any known cause for it; however, treatment is crucial. He needs to be medicated and you should not get involved with someone who is unstable (highs, lows, depression, suicidal thoughts & possibly acting on it, and even homicidal thoughts). Try really hard to talk him into seeing his physician. I can not stress the importance of medication!! Good Luck:-)

Don't know if I should say this here... but I think I will. Bipolars are perfectly normal people. It is only an imbalance of a certain chemical that produces moodiness-lithium. I have seen in my work with some and my study too that several of them can have very productive, useful and balanced lives if supported by someone who is not rocking their boat all the time. They can be very committed and certianly very intelligent. In fact among the most intelligent people of the world there is a huge list of bi-polars. If you were to get diabetes tomorrow, should someone desert you?
Yes one serious problem with bipolar disorder is that since these are very intelligent and charming people they are sometimes very sure of themselves too. So they are quite certain they can manage without medication. Being with one may actually induce him to be responsible about his own health and yours and he might even start with his medication more seriously. Without producing a sense of guilt you could instill that faith in him- that you will be there no matter what.
It is not ordinarily that bi-polars become suicidal. Homicidal? I don't think so. But the blues can get to them real hard. Therez a book called A MOOD APART specifically on mood disorders. Have a look at it. It might help to understand if you have any desire to. But rest assured pathology alone should not mean ostracism of anyone- society must try to bring them into its fold because these are the geniuses of tomorrow- the artists, politicians and scientists. Review the whole thing seriously and write to me personally if you want further references or anything else. Especially on bi-polars
