A/C froze up - thawed out and now won't run at all
HELP!! Yesterday, I took a nap and woke up a couple of hours later to find the house not feeling very cool. Checked the thermostat and although it was set for 65, the actual temp was 78. Checked outside unit and discovered that it was frozen. Melted the ice with pitchers of room temp water. Went back inside and set the thermostat to "Fan" but it didn't kick on. I could hear the main unit upstairs kick on - but not the outside one. I waited 30 minutes or so and tried again - still nothing from the outside unit. This happened once or twice last summer but the unit always functioned again once it was de-iced. So now, I don't know what to do. I'm trying desperately to avoid a service call as my grandmother just passed away and the burial drained my bank account to virtually nothing. PLEASE HELP!!

Check the circuit breaker in your electric panel for the outside unit. If tripped reset. Next check the fuses in the outside disconnect near the A/C unit. Replace fuse or fuses if defective.

    Report back with your findings.

Oh what a fabulous thing - if only one of those had been the problem. Circuit breakers and fuses all check out. But I like the way you think... What's my next move?

Look in the out side unit for a manual reset switch and push it in, not all units contain this switch ,Lennox and Amana are the common ones.Turn off power first (safty) This switch would be inside the outdoor unit.

I don't see a switch on the inside but then I really can't see inside it all that much. Can I remove the screen on top? Maybe I could see better if I could move the fan. Michelle

The switch that I mentioned would be accessible through the side panel or in the electrical panel of the unit , did you check your breakers and fuses ?
Look at the thermostat wires out side ,are they still connected to the a/c , are they scuffed or broken ?
