Sounds like your PC was halted in the middle of the upgrade where the drive was setup but the install wasn't complete. I would try reinstalling Win 98 and see if that works. (I would not recommend upgrading to Me).

To reinstall you will probably need to boot to your Win 98 startup floppy then run the install from your CD.

    Computer froze during ME upgrade
Thanks scottgem but now I have another problem.. I don't have a 98 or ME start up disk and I have tried places like bootdisk.com and startup.com etc and none of them will work I get the message "remove disk or other media press any key to restart" but I have an old windows 95 start up disk and it will boot win 95... what do I do there? I thank you for your help in this matter.

    Windows 98 vs windows xp
Well I will have to go back to windows 98 because my bro-in-law let me try his xp disk and I have too old of a computer and it says I can't do it without more of this and more of that.. I thought updatin to ME would be OK but now I see that a lot of you say its not good that win 98 is better... why? Anyway I still cannot get the computer going after it froze trying to install ME... if I would have know that you all think 98 is better I should not have tried the update. I know nothing about computers but I would take advice on how to get win 98 back then ill leave it alone... no more updates! Thanks

Can anyone tell me why the start up disks downloaded from different places like boot disk and startup .com won't work but the old 95 startup does! Thanks

You don't explain what isn't working about those startup disks. The startup disk needs to have the CD drivers on it to read the CD.

Don't bother with someone else's copy of XP,as it's configured to the motherboard, attachments, and PC drivers.Plus your brother-in-law's details are stored on servers at Redmond HQ.Microsoft take a dim view of that sort of thing, even if it's done "innocently".

.. I thought updatin to ME would be OK but now I see that a lot of you say its not good that win 98 is better... why?
ME was a rushed job,as Microsoft were messing about with Windows 2000,and also trying to concentrate on XP at the same time.It should really have been called 98 Third Edition, but was totally useless. It was buggy, unresponsive, and accident prone.Windows 98 Second Edition was/is far superior.Listen to what Scott said about needing the cd drivers to read the cd.

As for ME, yeah it was bad, 95 I would call better then ME, 98 was very stable, as is xp. 98 uses less then xp, so it may have been saying it needed more ram and drive space, as for buying xp legitly, I have even seen it sold in wally mart! But yeah do listen to scott, it needs certain drivers to run.

The files are executable.. that means, once you download them, you have to run them to install the necessary files on a floppy..
