There is water coming out of the basement pipe vent (vent is just before the main pipe out to the street sewer system) every time the sump pump goes on. We snaked the pipes past the vent but it still is coming out of the pipe vent. We cannot use any water in the house without the sump pump kicking on and water ends up all over the basement. What could be the problem?

Hey Bern,
In my area discharging anything but sewage and gray water into the city sewer is forbidden. Where does the water come out of your vent? A fitting? Opening in the pipe? What? Has this just started or has it always been like this? Has any work been don on your drainage lately? Does everyelse drain OK? Where does the sump pump connect into in relationship to the vent? In short we need more details. Regards. Tom

All the water from the house drains into two main pipes in the basement which leads to a main sewer pipe in the basement that leads to the city sewer system. The vent is at the joint (a fitting that is open to the air) where the two main pipes lead to the large pipe connecting to the main sewer pipe. It just started a few days ago, no work has been done on our pipes or drainage, everything drains fine (no backups) and the sump pump is connected before or in front of the vent.

You have a fitting in your drainage that's open?
If that's so then you have a direct open connection between your home and the city sewer allowing sewer gas to enter.
Sewer gas is dangerous to your families health and the methane content makes it explosive.

Well something's backing up or you wouldn't have water on your floor every time the pump runs. And it's downstream from the sump pump. Regards, Tom
