If you don't plan to reuse it, then several options will do... vice grips, open end, adjustable wrench, pipe wrench (small). I say that because scratching will not hurt anything if you don't plan to reuse it. If you want to reinstall it, then I would wrap it with a turn or two of cloth, then use vice grips. However, that is just me... I'm no pro.

I was in agreement with jlisenbe until I read, " I would wrap it with a turn or two of cloth, then use vice grips."
Vice grip jaws will bite through the cloth into the chrome. A better way would be to use a adjustable wrench in place of vice grips. Regards, tom

Speedball, thanks for the correction. You are entirely correct. I somehow started thinking about the chrome shower arm rather than the shower head. Cloth under vice grips has worked pretty well for me there in the past, but I do see how the jaws could penetrate the cloth. And, anyway, it wouldn't make sense for the shower head.

Learned something great from an old pro on how to eliminate scratching chrome:

Put a piece (or two) of duct tape only on each jaw of vise grips, pliers, or pipe wrenches. I've used this technique for years now and smile every time.
