    Ruth:

For sure you should be exempt from the FICA taxes (Social Security and Medicare), because you are a non-resident alien. This assumes that this is the FIRST time you have been to the U.S. on a J-1 or F-1 visa.

You MAY be TOTALLY EXEMPT from taxes. For total exemption, you must be a visiting academic doing research or teaching for a non-profit or academic institution like a university. The exemption is good ONLY FOR two years, and if you stay BEYOND two years, you LOSE THE EXEMPTION retroactively (meaning you have to go back and pay the income taxes you would have paid).

Contact the human resources department of your host to determine if you qualify.

I was told, I can deduct (itemized) all the expences related to stay (like apartment rent, food etc... ) since I am on H1-B visa. I have been working for the same employer in the same location for the past 5 years. I have allways done standard deduction. Is this true in anyway? Thanks
