    Doctor ethics and professionalism
I went to the doctor yesterday as a new patient. Something happened to me that has never happened before. The physician first of all started with stating that I was a beautiful young 42-year-old and then asked what I was there to see him for. I told him I had been having problems with my stomach and my sinuses. He asked more questions and then told me to get on the examining table. He listened to my heart, I thought, but he was putting the stethoscope all over my breasts, in my shirt, etc. listening? Then he unzipped my pants and palpated my stomach, and pressed on my lower abdomen down around my underwear and told me not to zip my pants back up and he then proceeded to tell me we needed to do a "rectal exam", at which point he called the nurse in. She came in, and with no notice he told me to stand up, turn around, and get on the exam table on my hands and knees with my butt in the air. He proceeded to help me pull down my pants and the nurse was present during this. He only told me he was going to do a rectal exam, but he ended doing a vaginal exam with my butt in the air?? Then he did the rectal exam, as he commented to the nurse I am no gynecologist. I had no drape or covering over me, and no chance to undress alone in the room before he proceeded to do this exam. After this, the nurse left the room, and the last thing he said to me as he was very close to me was, "If I was going to pursue you, I would not as you are too expensive for me". Is this ethical? I feel very violated and wondering if I should report him? I have been told by some of my friends that I should file a police report, but I am so confused as to what I should do. I have been a medical transcriptionist for 18 years and have typed on many patients and I have had three children with many medical exams and never had this experience! I was so trusting that the doctor knew what he was doing but after I left his office, I felt violated. Am I am wrong, should I report him, or this is a normal practice?

Your input would be greatly appreciated.

I have never heard of an exam like that. Yes, I would report this.

    Tblondie:

A pelvic exam in the prone position??

I would contact your state board of medical liscensure and lodge a complaint.

Before you do that I would also request a copy of your medical records - your entitiled to it via HIPPA laws.

Yes, this is a reportable offense. If I knew what state you were in I would give you the website for the licensure board. Unfortunately, if you are out of the US I can't help you.

But yes, most defintately you MUST report this.

Yes! Yes! Yes! Report this! He was extremely unprofessional. And he was right he is no gyno. If he had any reason to think you needed a vaginal exam he would send you to the gyno. Plus, there is no way he can truly check you in that position, at least I don't think so. His words in itself were wrong, but his actions put it over the top. REPORT!!

Thank you for all your advise. I am in the State of Florida and have already contacted the state board licensure and have printed out the forms to file a complaint against him. Thanks again...

I am cancered that my Husband's Dr. is being unethical because he won't give him any pain medication unless I come in and give a pee test that I would have to pay for. This is to make sure that I'm not taking any of his medication. Is this right or not?
