    200 Sub-Panel Location
Is it OK to mount a 200A sub-panel in a utility closet? What are the rules related to the location for sub-panels within a single family dwelling? The main is a 400A meter main located outside attached to the garage. This is for my home in Burbank, CA.

    Thank you,
    Royce M

The only locations restricted by national code is a panelboard cannot be located in a clothes closet or a bathroom.

Best to check with local codes, as I know of one state that does not allow panelboards installed under stairs.

Tk, is current code also, 30" side to side, and 36" in front clearance?

Haven't had to get close to the limits for a while? Thanks

Poster, Like above, check local codes

Yes on the clearances. The 30 inch can begin on one side of the panel and go 30 in to the other side. Does not need to be centered.

The 36" in front is still standard, this clearance gets larger as thew voltage rises, or gear is facing each other.

Thanks guys. I spoke with the electrical inspector for my area and he said basically what was mentioned above. No other special rules.
