    Doxie diarrhea after Heartgard med
Is there a safe home remedy for short-term diarrhea caused by heartworm meds? My 12 pound Doxie got a bad case and after two days of messes, I need a quick fix for next time and is it OK to give her 1/2 dose since it's given to dogs up to 25 lbs. And what's the best food to feed after a case of the trots?

Unless you have seen a pattern in the past, I doubt it was the heartworm medicine. If it is, I would switch products. In the summer, I switch from Heartgard+ to Revolution which does fleas too. The Revolution is applied topically. Talk to your vet about alternatives.

I am slow to suggest medicating a dog yourself. You could try 1 ml of Kaopectate per pound every 2 hours.

    Bland recovery diet for dogs.

3 parts cooked rice, one part boiled hamburger or chicken, or cottage cheese. I think you can substitute boiled potatoes for the rice. Once in an emergency, we bought a plain baked potato from Wendy's.

This is meant for short time settling a dog's digestive tract. It is not the complete and balanced diet they need long term. I have seen it work.

THis takes a good detective, look around the house, keep your nose to the ground just like the doxie. Chances are you will see what he ate that doesn't agree with him. Heartguard has no active ingrediant to cause a loose stool. The only problem heartguard can cause in dogs is caughing an breathing issues. This of witch are ONLY from dogs taking heartguard with the presence of live hearworms. Heartguard is a preventive medication, not a treatment of heartworms. So having said that, I have no concerns with your little doxie having a loose stool from her monthly heartguard. Chances are that little hunter found something and kept that little surprise all to herself an we may never know what it was. The chances of it being heartguard are very slim to almost impossible. Small rule of thumb, Meds given by mouth often show side effects within an hour of injestion. Vomiting, swelling, shortness of breath, etc. PS hope you have hard wood floors. :)

I am pleased to have what I suspected confirmed by a professional. Not only do we have a hardwood floor, it has an industrial grade moisture curing urethane finish. With a new puppy every year, and many visitors, I would hate to go back to carpet.

Hello, Please contact me at [email protected] My dog had the same symptoms as your dog, throwing up and loose stoools... this is very serious because no one believes that it was from the meds!! I just think this is too rare for me to type in heartgaurd and sick in Google and find a DOXI just a few pounds larger then mine with the same symptoms... okay? Please call the number on the box and report it..!

Wow, this makes 2 cases. Worm medicine frequently causes loose stools. The dogs body may be expelling the dead round worms the Heartgard killed. I certainly hope you had a heartworm test before starting the Heartgard or you dog may have far more serious problems. Did you call the vet about the diarrhea?

Arnold does not have heartworm. He gave Arnold an Anti Biotic and told me that he still has the paracites inside of him. I have no idea, I am just glad he is doing fine!!
