    Honda CV Driveshaft Replacement
    Hi, all!

I want to change a cv driveshaft on my 96 civic and the questions are are:

    1. can I do it by myself in apartment parking lot (is it feasible at all)?
    2. do I need to drain transfluid before replacing?

I have honda repair manual, and it mentions something about a special tool - ball joint remover. Does anybody know if I can get it from the auto store?

    Thanks!

It's possible to do it in an apartment parking lot, just not advisable. Put the front up on stand jacks. Use a large screwdriver to separate the half-shaft from the transaxle housing. There's no need to drain the transaxle--no fluid should run out, if it's level. Yes, you can get a ball joint remover at almost any auto parts store.

I always used a sledge hammer on the knuckle, a few shots and the knuckle and ball joint separate.:D

Did you replace the half-shaft on the passenger side? Did you install a remanufactured axle or did you clean and repack your old one?

I replaced left one at the shop for $115. Planning to get a new right one - the whole thing.

The boot and CV joint on the passenger-side normally goes first, because people make more right turns than left turns. The shaft is also shorter and the angle greater on the passenger-side.

An experienced mechanic can remove, clean, repack, replace four boots, and button things up in an hour.
