Briggs Stratton 133400 battery charging system
Is there a simple book or diagram on line for trouble shooting/ Do you know the basics of how the system works? I don't think mine is charging although the starter seems to work OK once I charge the battery from protable charger.

Get a volt meter and check the battery, should be 12 + volts not running. Start the engine and volts should go up. The vaoltage increase is dependent on the condition of the battery. If the battery is low you should see 13.5-14.5 volts on a fully charged it should just go up slightly.

This works on automobiles as well.

I am choking here.. . I am not sure where I failed you but will try again. The charging system is an alternator located under the flywheel. It has an inline diode (source of failure) so voltage flows only to battery . When the engine spins it spins the flywheel that has magnets glued to the inside these move past the windings on the stator (alternator) and create DC voltage most units also include a rectifier to control the voltage output. The wires are connected to the battery and when the engine runs it should in theory charge battery. If not try what I posted before and it should determine if it is working. As for manuals they are available in all different forms because the theory is basic and widley used not sure of a specific one for your mower.

I hope it clears up what needed clearin'

Sorry Don but apparently I need to spread around my compliments before I can get back to you. Nice job on the explanation. I think Hay wants a hard copy to hold in his hand and I too have found that helpful. Keep up the good work Don.
