I am 25 years old and got a felony DUI, and I am interested in becoming a real estate agent and was asking if that is a career field I can pursue and if anybody has any other careers that they know a felon can peruse let me know, I really would like to go to college but not sure if I would qualify for financial aid?

I think you would be OK with financial aid. Start looking, check all the colleges within a reasonable driving distance. I got into a fairly expensive private school, and financial aid pays for most of the tuition. There are going to be certain jobs that will not hire you. But on the upside I think California has a 10- year law on how long it can be used in hiring. Cal is the only state, (because I know sommeone will argue this) that has this. Hek go and get a masters degree, that takes 7 or 8 years anyway.

I don't know where you live. But, in the state in which I live, which is Illinois, you can't get a realtor's license if you have been convicted of a felony. I don't know about other states, though.

Careers for a person that has been convicted of a D.U.I. that is considered a felony? Based upon the information that you have posted, I would think the following. Well, your conviction didn't have anything to do with handling money or hurting anyone other than yourself, and you are 25 years old. I would say that it is likely that if you are qualified for a job that you want, then the potential employer is likely to take those factors into consideration.

My point is, that you need to look up the types of jobs in which you are interested. See if having a felony on your record is a bar to employment. Get the education for, and go for the ones where having been convicted of a felony is not a problem.

If I were you, I also wouldn't think of yourself as a felon. D.U.I. Lots of people get those. It's unfortunate, yes. Sometimes tragic. Just don't drink and drive ever again. That would be stupid if you did.

But, I would hold my head up high and move on with my life if I were you. Ever onward, ever upward! It is the choices that you make in life that count!

Only felony drug convictions can get financial aid for school . This was a DUI you should be fine as far as school goes .

You should be OK with going to school.

At least in TN you will need to get a waiver to be a real estate agent, ( if they will issue one) they have a rule that no one with a felony can become an agent, they will allow some but have to review each and will rule on it, so you always would request an OK prioer to starting any required training.

I'll tell you what, don't listen to what others say about felonies. I am a felon for statutory sexual assault. I am a full time student and I have a good full time job. You can get financial aid through the govnement. I just did it. The main thing you need to remember is that just because you have a felony don't mean the worlds going to end. Of course there is always the general public and there opinions but that's something you'll have to deal with.

Well he does need to check to be a real estate agent, each state has specific rules, when I went to my school, the first day, the teacher asked how had ever been arrested for a felony, if they did not have a state waiver in hand, they went home, period.

You should talk to a Lawyer about having your record expunged. I was a real estate agent and that's what I did. It depends on your record and the crime. It cost me 500 dollars. It gave me a new start.

In my state, you'd have a tough time getting licensed to be a realtor. Any occupation requiring a state license would be off limits, at least for a number of years. Your best bet is probably going to be to seek employment in private industry or become self-employed.

As others have noted, the possibility of employment and licensure depends on many factors: where you're located, the law in your state, etc. Definitely look into the possibility of getting your record expunged. Regarding college, there should be no problems getting admitted or receiving financial aid. I know from personal experience. :-/

I applied for a license as counselor in Illinois a few years ago with a similar charge on my record - I had to include a copy of my arrest record, wrote an explanation, and had my priest write a letter attesting to my character and sobriety. I had no difficulty getting licensed. So it really does depend. If I *had* been rejected, I would have contacted the Department of Professional Regulation and asked them: what do I do to change things? Talked my way into graduate school that way once after my application had been rejected. I *really* wanted to go to that school. :-)

Felons cannot obtain financial aid you have to pay out of your own pocket... sorry that is just the way the law is written.

What motivates you in becoming a real estate agent?

How I Got A Job As A Felon:

I recently was sentenced in August/2007 for software piracy, putting a felony on my record. I graduated in 2004 with a degree in Graphic Design.

2 months after I was sentenced, I was offered a job doing graphic design work for a prominent dentist office in my area. I told them of the felony and explained what happened and they were OK with it in the end. The #1 reason I got the job was because of God. I give Him all the glory. But even with God's help, I had to put the effort into getting the job. This was my strategy:

First impressions. I knew that there is a prejudice against felons. So I knew that the only way past this prejudice was to have the employer meet me as a person, and get them to like me. I acted nice and curteous to them. I knew that if their first impression of me was of a nice and talented guy, then when I told them of my felony, instead of viewing my felony through their prejudice, they would view my felony through my good first impression.

The problem is that on normal job apps you have to put down the felony. So what I did was apply to places where I just had to email them a resume, no application. So I got a call, interviewed, they offered me the position, I gave them a yes 2 days later and told them of the felony then, a week later they called to say that everything checked out well.

Manipulation is the key. Go for jobs where you don't have to send in a normal application. That way you can choose the right time to tell them of the felony.
