What functions are lost when outdoor sensors are not used with a heatpump/Gas furnace
I want to replace a home thermostat that has an outdoor sensor with one that does not. The heating system is a heat pump with a gas furnace backup. What function would be lost?

I think my sensors may be dirty on my Rheem Criterion II gas furnace? Does anyone know where they are or have a diagram of them. I know from one other time that I am suspossed to clean the left one but not the right one... but do not remember where they are.
We would like to override our heatpump and have the gas furnace run instead. The heatpump has a setting to instruct it to run up to a certain outdoor temperature, and once it gets lower than that then the furnace kicks in. Our thermostat has an emergency heat setting that is supposed to activate...
Should a person take this flame sensor off and use steel wool to clean it, or what does the flame sensor do? Mine is on a electronic Rheem furnace.
