    US-UK Tax Treaty
    Hi,

I am a British citizen, and I've been at Harvard for almost three years. I filed my first two years' federal tax forms as a participant in the US-UK tax treaty, so I was exempt from federal tax. However, since our research was going well, I stayed on longer, for almost another year. Federal tax has been coming out of my salary for all of this third year.

I am pretty sure I now have to file the 1040X forms and amend my tax returns for last year and the year before. Does anybody know if there is anyway of getting round this. What about the penalties and interests - can they be avoided at least?

I lookf forward to your response

You have to apply to be exempted from the retroactive tax rule with the INS.

It is NOT an easy process.
