Ok, I downloaded windows xp on my desktop computer a while ago without a problem. I recently purchased a laptop. I tried to download windows xp onto it and I kept getting the error message that the authenticity code that I put in wasn't valid, which makes no sense to me. :confused: What can I do? Also, I am trying to download this program. I was able to download it before but had to remove it from my computer. I tried to put it on again but it says I am missing a file that I must have had before called VCL645MI.DLL. How can I get this file back and if not, how can I download the program?

Hi,
By "downloaded", do you mean you installed XP to a computer using the install CD's?
If so, then you cannot install the same XP, using the same install CD's onto another computer.
With Win95, 98, ME, and 2000, Microsoft did not have any "built-in" codes. You could copy install Cd's and use them on any computers.
With XP, Microsoft finally got smart, and made the install CD's good for only one computer!

If this is some "free" copy you got, well for one thing, make sure the computer is up for the task, of handling xp, and make sure you actually buy the software, if you did (from a store, computer store, wally mart, etc.) then I'd say try and take it back, if this was a copy you got from a friend that used it, or a freebie off the internet, just buy a real copy at a store...

Just to expand on what Fred said. Windows activation keys are made by an algorithm that uses details about your PC. It will check things like your motherboard, hard drive, RAM etc. and use these details to make a Windows key specific for your PC. Using the key from a desktop on a laptop means that the hardware in your PC is totally different and therefore your XP key won't work.

As to the first part: You don't buy software, you buy a license to use it. That license usually has some restrictions. The restrictions are listed in the End Users License Agreement (EULA). In the case of Windows, it is licensed to one computer. The only legal way to install it on another computer is by removing it from the first computer. You say you recently purchased a laptop, didn't that come with Windows? Why were you trying to install it?

Also just to get some terms straight. The process of downloading is transferring files from a remote computer to your PC. Loading a software package onto your machine so it can be used is called installing.

For the second part, what program are you trying to download?
