Dip switch change on SMC ceiling fan
I want to change the dip switch on the remote so a neighbor does not activate my fan. Do I also have to change the receiver? If so, how do I remove the cover against the ceiling?

Yes, receiver is in there. Drop the cover, carefully remove receiver, change the DIP code and do the same on the transmitter.
