    Constant need for deep breaths
Right now I'm 17 years old and I'm currently studying high school for the first year.

Recently for some reason I always need to take deep breaths, in class, at home etc. Also at the same time I tend to sleep earlier than usual (10pm to 6:30 am for school days) and it makes me more tired than before, and sometimes in class I get dizzy, but never experience blackouts. Sometimes even when I need to take a deep breath, it feels uncomfortable.

Despite having these problems, it did little to affect my grades, but it does make me worry whether this is normal for high school students to face or not, and whether I should tell my parents about this situation, since it first happened.

I'm not exactly sure why I constantly need to take deep breaths but I did think of some factors, for example I started to have this habit of drinking coffee each day, and I agree that it seems early for high school students to drink coffee, can this sudden change of diet relate to me having this issue?

Or rather it was stress given from my first year of high school which caused it? I'm now taking psychology, chemistry and visual arts and my grades are just average, far worse than my last year of middle school.

Or was it because my long term sleep deprivation which caused it, this is my first year when I pulled an all nighter in an attempt to complete a certain project. Another possibility, could my sudden change of sleep pattern relate to it?

It would be grateful for me to know the following: why I would have this constant need for deep breaths? Whether this is serious or not? And what is the best method to help reducing it or recover from it? Thx

I suggest you tell your parents as there could be an underlying cardiac condition that you are not aware of; if you tell your parents they may have insight regarding a genetic condition. I hope they take you for testing to get to the bottom of this, as it could be serious, cut out the coffee for sure. Of course diagnosing on the net is impossible so my suggestion is just that, a suggestion.

I have the same problem but first you should go to your doctor and see if it could be like an infection or something. Then you could possibly get tested for asthma. Also if you have anxiety or are under a lot of stress then it will cause that problem but it's usually not long term. It could also be something to do worth your circulatory system because your brain isn't getting enough oxygen from blood flow that it will actually make you take deeper breaths or yawn a lot. I would suggest maybe getting treated for that too especially if your hands and feet get cold easily or you get dizzy when you stand. Hope this helps.

I've had this problem since I was around 14. It comes and goes. I thought it was allergies, turns out that for me, it was nerves. I go through stages where I literally have to force myself to yawn in order to get enough air. When I'm stressed it happens, and once it starts, it continues for weeks on end because it becomes a habit. Just talking about it made me yawn for a breath, made my chest feel tight.

Now, having said that, this doesn't mean that the same thing is going on with you. It could be stress related, it could be allergies, it could be the caffeine you're drinking, it could be asthma, it could be many different things.

You'll need to tell your parents, and you'll need to see a doctor.
