On Friday evening our taps were spluttery when we turned them on. Later the water stopped running entirely. Nothing comes out at all. If you try to flush the toilet, there is no pressure at all. On Saturday morning we turned the boiler off in case it was a hazard when the water wasn't working. About half an hour later, the water tank noises as if water was rushing into it, and the water came back - spluttery at first and then fine. It was fine all day Saturday. But we have just woken up this morning (UK time!) and it's completely gone again. Any ideas?

I am assuming this is well water. The sputtering (air) could suggest a dropping water table or a leak in a wellpipe. The fact that the water completely goes away at times also points toward the water table.

Give us a little more info. Is the pump above ground or in the well? What kind of wellpipe do you have, steel or plastic?

I agree! If you had said that the water stopped completely I would have thought that you had an open in the section line allowing air to enter. However, it looks like it's time to dig your well deeper to compensate for a falling water table.
