    Purging hot water systems
I have a water heater system that has 1-1/4" return line, that does not have a hose bib and shutt off valve to purge the system, was that a mistake? Should I install one?

    Hi Juan

    That depends...

If you have radiators or baseboard heaters that have individual vents that can be used to purge the air from the system then you are fine without the hose bib and shutoff. With that being said, I always install a hose bib and shutoff on all my return lines as it helps me to quickly purge the main lines (1.25") and then I do each radiator or baseboard individually, so up to you if you decide to or not!

I closed the return line and opened the purging valve. It drained water and air out but then stopped draining water. I have the thermostat down so water isn't circulating. Shouldn't I be getting a continuous flow of water?

I am having trouble purging air from my closed-loop hot water oil system. I close gate valve on return, then open purge valve (with hose attatched). Water runs, no air, pipes get hot but soon after cool down?? Any ideas? Timowner
