    Adopting my friends baby?
I am 19 years in a relationship, currently a full time student without a job. My boyfriend has a full time job, and is looking into going back to school starting next semester. While here, I met a girl who is currently pregnant with her second child by the second guy. He has said he wants nothing to do with this baby, and refuses to pay any child support after it has arrived. She too does not want anything to do with this baby, and my boyfriend and I would like to adopt it. So my questions are; 1. is it possible to do an informal adoption of sorts? And 2. If not, what are our chances of getting this baby? What do we need to do to increase those chances?

There is no such thing as an "informal adoption". An adoption is a legal process that has to be approved by a court. Requirements for an adoption vary by area. Most areas require the adoptive couple to be married.

The court will require that a home evaluation be done before approving an adoption. BOTH parents will need to agree to it.

Not knowing where you are located or what your home situation is like, I can't guess at whether you would be approved for the adoption. You need to consult with a local Family Lawyer who will know the local courts.

One last point in this, the father can't refuse to pay support if the mother goes to court for support. He may be able to dodge support by working under the table or disappearing, but he can't just refuse to pay. However, if you do adopt, that will sever his ties to the child and his responsibility for support.
