    My dog swallowed a bone
I do not feed my dog anything other than dry dog food. A friend was over for dinner and gave the ring bone from a ham steak to my dog.Faster than I could get it away he swallowed it.My Pitbull weighs about 60lbs. The ring bone was as big as a silver dollar. I watched him closely as once he tried to vomit from eating grass only liquid came out he has been fine since. This was Sunday night when he ate this bone Monday morning I called the vet they said don't worry it should pass. I have watched his stools and they all seem to be normal. How long would it take to disolve if it will. How long should I keep watching since he acts as if nothings wrong. Worried Dad.

A dog's digestion is faster than ours, and his intestines are pretty much in a straight line, unlike ours. I agree that it should pass, partly digested, in a 60 lb dog, and from Sunday to Friday, it should be gone by now. The big concern of bones is sharp ones that can perforate. Keep an eye on his bowel movements for signs of straining, just in case. Tell your 'friend' he owes your dog a big huge rawhide bone.

I agree with everything Joy has said, except the last part. No rawhide bone, they're worse than any real bone a dog could eat. Steer clear of the rawhide.

Why no rawhide, Alty? A dog can soften a piece and chew it off and choke on it? (Never happened with my dogs but I can see it possibly happening.)
Is there any safe long lasting chewy edible?

My dogs hack and choke and swallow rawhides whole because they get so soft..

To the op... that bone is probably already gone.. it will break down into white stool..

My vet has always warned me against rawhide, mainly because it's a choking hazard, also because of the process it goes through when being made, many contaminants.

I have given my dogs rawhide, but Jasper (RIP) actually choked on one once (no, that's not how he died), and since then, I decided to take my vets advice and stop giving them these treats.

You can buy safe bones at pet stores, and they last longer. I'd have to check, but my husband buys the dogs bones that still have some meat on them. They're around the size of my lower arm, huge! The dogs will chew on them for hours. They last for weeks. They are messy though, and they stink, but it's worth it to see them so happy.

The one my husband buys looks a bit like the one on the top left.
