How are microfiber down-alternative comforters assembled? Before we started buying down comforters, I used to make ours. My materials consisted of bed sheets that I would cut to size and fiberfill by the roll -- the kind used in sleeping bags. I was able to wash and dry these comforters in a short time. The fill was lofty and really warm, just as sleeping bags are. The best part was that the fibers in the fill intertwined, held together and didn't shift around. Then we started buying down comforters. The down shifts around inside the "baffle" boxes and even shifts to neighboring baffles to end up with some having no down in them at all. The comforters need to be professionally cleaned which costs a fortune. So I tried washing them. Well, that just ended up with the down bunched together and would take days of drying over and over in the dryer. If the microfiber is in tufts to resemble down and the baffles are filled, this isn't going to be an "alternative" at all for me.

Any thoughts or actual knowledge would be so greatly appreciated.

It cost me $15 to have my down duvet cleaned professionally, so don't know where you are, but I am in Ontario.

Down duvets can be washed successfully and drying is accomplished quickly without the down shifting if you use 3 or 4 tennis balls in the dryer with the duvet.

I don't know how they fill fibre alternate duvets.

Fiberfill isn't separated in the baffles the way down is. It's just stitched in one big piece, using any pattern you want. That not only helps keep it from bunching, but it also helps keep heat from escaping out the stitching.

Thanks for your answers, tickle and joypuly. They were both helpful. I am going to try the tennis balls with the down comforters I still have, but I'm buying a down alternative. Since they aren't so expensive, it's may be worth a try-and-see.
