Agreed, a freshman should be past the 'like' and 'like well' stage of talking and writing.

PLEASE understand that we aren't there. How do we know what a guy is thinking? You are the one looking and listening for the tiny clues that indicate what someone is thinking. If you don't notice any, you ASSUME that a boy's motives are just friendly, because otherwise you will make him uncomfortable. Let relationships happen slowly.
You are half of any interaction with another person. You drop tiny clues too. That's how it works. You don't go through life wondering what everyone else is thinking; if you like someone, you give a super nice thanks, or a compliment, or ask him about himself. Without falling all over him, and without acting too cool and casual either. It's an art, but the main rule is to be genuine, be yourself.
